Birthday Wishes

Well today is a first.  I celebrated my 38th birthday on a different continent halfway across the world from home.  We woke up this morning and went to Le Grande Cafe for breakfast.  I had an ommelette fromagge, juice naturale, and a chocolat croissant.  Can you guess what those things are?  Shouldn't be real hard.

We then came back to the mission to get our things ready to head to the waterfall in Boali.  I walked in the door and Ann, Rosalie and Irma started clapping and singing happy birthday to me in English even.  It was fun and Ann did her little African cheer when we were done.  I can't duplicate it on a blog. . . I guess you will just have to hear her do it when you come to Africa!

We had a fun time at the falls today just being away. The ride there is always filled with all the African sights from the incredible countryside to small taxis with 30 or so people piled inside, in the trunk, on the trunk, on the back bumper, on the roof of the car and anywhere else they can find room.  I haven't taken any pictures of that, but will try to get one that has been taken.  It is incredibly dangerous as you can imagine, but a very common sight in Bangui.

We got home just in time to change clothes and head to the Ngoumape house for dinner.  Dr. Ngoumape was in the states 2 years ago and was able to go to an OSU football game and now is a Buckeye fan with more memorabilia in his house than I have in mine.  He has a beautiful home here that his brother owns who is a lawyer in France.  He has 11 of his 19 children living in the home still and his wife, Claire, and his children served us.  We had plantains, green beans and carrots, fresh French bread, grilled chicken (the African way of grilling), and then a huge platter of rice with beef, peas and carrots in it that was delicious.  After we were done eating they brought out a fresh ear of corn for everyone on the team that was grown in their garden.

We got home about 8:00 and the rest of the missionary team joined us upstairs in the guesthouse and they sang Happy Birthday to me again and we ate brownie sundaes with homemade vanilla ice cream.

It has been a good day.
